Tatsu Aoki's Miyumi Project

The Miyumi Project, founded in 1996 by prominent Chicago bassist/composer/community leader Tatsu Aoki, is the Midwest's leading ensemble dedicated to the creation and performance of music representative of the Asian American experience. Informed by musical forms including traditional Japanese music/taiko (Japanese drums), jazz, and improvised/creative music, the Miyumi Project is a multi-ethnic, multi-generational ensemble comprised of the leading Asian American and African American musicians of Chicago. The Miyumi Project has performed at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, the Chicago Jazz Festival, and the Smithsonian with an expanded version of the ensemble, the Miyumi Project Big Band, performing at Millennium Park in July 2006. In June 2007 the Miyumi Project was the featured ensemble during the Malta International Theatre Festival/Asian American Jazz Festival: Poland event in Poznan, Poland
